The “do we have to…” groans quickly turn into leaf fights, puddle jumps, and stick-duelling whoops of joy.
Because autumn in the Cotswolds is a season like no other. This year is even more special as it’s a mast year, which happens naturally due to a combination of good weather, abundant resources, and the tree's natural cycle of reproduction. This is when the ground seems positively littered with conkers, horse chestnuts, acorns and seeds. For children, it’s basically treasure-hunting heaven.
(Confession: my little ones have been scooping up conkers for me to “keep” so if you’ve got any ideas for crafting other than the usual conker fights my cupboards would be very grateful!! )
Regardless, let me take you on a tour of my favourite family-friendly autumn walks in the Cotswolds – perfect for children, dogs, and anyone who loves a good wander.
1. Batsford Arboretum – A Kaleidoscope of Colour
Best for: Families who love vibrant colours and easy paths.
Batsford Arboretum, located near Moreton-in-Marsh, is a hidden gem when it comes to autumn walks. The collection of over 2,500 trees creates a spectacular burst of colours from deep reds to fiery oranges and yellows.
Photography Tip: The paths make perfect leading lines for family shots.
Family Moment: Children will love exploring - find the little houses carved in the trees!
Where next? Blockley Café for coffee, cake, and a warm-up.
2. Westonbirt Arboretum – A World of Autumnal Wonders
Best for: A big day out with kids and dogs.
Westonbirt Arboretum, one of the most famous autumnal destinations in the UK, is ideal for a day out with the family.
Photography Tip: The Maple Loop is one of the most photogenic spots, with the trees turning brilliant shades of red. A wide-angle shot from the treetop walkways will give you a perfect view of the autumn canopy.
Family Moment: The kids will love the hidden Gruffalo sculptures along the trail. A family portrait next to one of these woodland creatures is a must!
Where next? The Hare & Hounds Hotel serves a cracking Sunday roast nearby.
3. Lineover Woods – An Enchanted Forest Experience
Best for: Families seeking a quieter, more intimate woodland experience.
For those who love to explore woodlands off the beaten path, Lineover Woods near Cheltenham offers a peaceful escape. As the mists roll through the trees, the atmosphere here feels magical, with dappled sunlight casting long shadows over the fallen leaves.
Photography Tip: Lineover Woods is perfect for capturing that pure contrast of how tiny our children seem against the tall trees. Squat down and point your camera up to exaggerate that contrast.
Family Moment: A giant fallen log makes the ultimate climbing frame.
Where next? Dunkertons Park is nearby – perfect for bakery treats in the morning or grab lunch at one of the lovely street food eateries.
4. Broadway Tower – Majestic Views and Rolling Hills
Best for: Families looking for a bit of adventure and incredible scenery.
Broadway Tower, standing tall, offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The walk up to the tower is easy enough for children but offers plenty of space for exploration. In autumn, the countryside below is a patchwork of orange, yellow, and green.
Photography Tip: Get low, and take a photo silhouetted against sky, or use the tower itself as a dramatic backdrop for a wide-angle landscape shot.
Family Moment: Keep children going by getting them to spot the local wildlife - from ladybirds, to deer and longhorn cattle
Where next? Broadway village has plenty of food stops – Russell’s Fish & Chips is a family winner.
5. Painswick Rococo Gardens – A Hidden Autumn Treasure
Best for: Best for: Families who enjoy blending country gardens and wild woodland.
Painswick Rococo Gardens, tucked away in the village of Painswick, is a beautiful blend of formal gardens and wild woodland. The garden's quirky design includes hidden follies, winding paths, and a maze – all of which look spectacular as the autumn leaves fall.
Photography Tip: Frame a shot through the archways of the gardens or the rustic stone buildings
Family Moment: Little legs go further when there’s something to spot - Head over at Half Term and take part in the Great Scarecrow Hunt!
Where next? Falcon Inn for hearty pub food in the village.
6. The Hedgehog Trail, Gotherington – A Family Challenge
Best for: Families who love a map and a task!
The Hedgehog Trail in Gotherington is a lovely activity for families or groups to enjoy together. It could take a few explorations to find them all, but there's lovely scenery, a fab pub, garden centre and park to visit! All profits are split between the three local charities supported by this event: Vale Wildlife Hospital, Friends of Gotherington School and The Old Chapel Community Project.
Photography Tip: Instead of taking a picture why not encourage the kids to get arty themselves and come up with their own hedgehog designs? Shifting the frame to inspire the next little snappers.
What to Bring Along
Wellies and layers – puddles and mud are irresistible.
Snacks and a flask – keeps little legs moving.
Charged camera or phone – autumn light is magic.
Dog leads – every walk here is dog-friendly.
Turn Your Autumn Walk Into a Family Photoshoot
I love photographing families in natural, unposed moments – leaf fights, dog walks, or pausing under golden trees. These walks make perfect backdrops for a Cotswolds family photoshoot: conker collections, kids mid-leap from a log, or dogs racing through the leaves. If you’d like to capture these moments, I can join your family walk and photograph it. Bring the kids, bring the doggies - let’s document the real joy of autumn together.
