The Best Noise-Friendly Firework Displays for Kids in the Cotswolds: 2025 Guide

As both a family photographer and a mum in the Cotswolds, I know how magical fireworks season can be - that sparkle in the air, little faces glowing under hats and scarves, and the thrill of staying up past bedtime.

But for some children, the loud bangs and busy crowds can feel overwhelming. That’s why finding a child-friendly or low-noise fireworks display in the Cotswolds can make such a difference.

Two young girls playing with a sparkler on firework night

When little ones feel safe and relaxed, their true joy shines through - and that’s when you see those natural smiles, the laughter, and the wide-eyed wonder that make Bonfire Night so special. Choosing a quieter, family-focused event isn’t just about reducing the noise; it’s about creating the kind of calm, happy memories you’ll actually want to capture.

So, if you’re looking for a family-friendly fireworks display in or around the Cotswolds, here’s my round-up of the best low-noise and child-friendly events for a magical, stress-free night out.

Halloween Tic Tack Toe

The Battle of Pumpkins and Ghosts

If these rainy days leave you looking for a fun Halloween craft for kids (or for yourself!), this handmade pumpkin and ghost tic tac toe game is such a lovely project to try... Made from air-dry clay and decorated with paint, with optional gold leaf to finish, it’s part craft, part keepsake – and can be enjoyed year after year. You can even turn your finished game into a little stop motion video using the Stop Motion app for an extra bit of Halloween fun.

And if you’d like to make your own, here’s how we did it.

What You’ll Need

• Air-dry clay (we used this one)

• Acrylic paints in your favourite Halloween shades

• Gold leaf for that extra touch of magic

• PVA glue

• Paintbrushes and clay sculpting tools

• A rolling pin

• A small bowl of water for smoothing edges

Step 1: Create Your Characters

Roll out your clay to around 5mm thick

Make your pumpkins and ghosts – five of each is perfect for a tic tac toe game.

Add little details using a sculpting tools, toothpick, or the end of a paintbrush.

Step 2: Make the Board

Roll out another piece of clay into a circle, flute the edges (fiddly, but optional!)

Create two horizontal and two vertical lines

Lightly score the along where the lines will go on the board before sticking down with water

Leave your clay pieces to dry fully – usually 24 to 48 hours depending on the clay you use.

Once they’re dry, lightly sand any rough edges if needed.

Step 3: Now for the fun part – painting!

Top tip from my daughter - (practise the faces before you put them onto the figures!) Once dry, you can seal them with a little diluted PVA.

Once the paint is dry, use PVA glue to gently apply gold leaf to the edges or details once the paint has dried for that extra sparkle. It gives such a lovely finish and makes your handmade game feel truly special.

And that’s it – your very own Halloween tic tac toe set! It’s simple, a bit messy, and full of character – just the way the best family crafts are.

Bonus: Stop Motion Video

If you’d like to bring your Halloween tic tac toe to life, try making a stop motion video. It’s much easier you think and children love watching their creations move!

Here’s how we did ours using the Stop Motion app:

1. Set up your scene – make sure your board and pieces are in good light, and your phone or camera is steady. A tripod or a stack of books works perfectly. Blu tack your board to the table!

2. Open the Stop Motion app and tap the plus sign to start a new project.

3. Take a photo, move one game piece ever so slightly, then take another photo.

4. Repeat this process – move, snap, move, snap – until you’ve played out your whole game.

5. Preview your animation in the app. If it’s too fast, you can adjust the frame rate easily.

6. Add music or titles if you like, then save your video and share it with friends or family.

It’s such a fun way to capture a handmade project – and a lovely memory to look back on each Halloween!

Capture the Magic in photos

Simple activities like this are where the best family memories are made – the laughter, the mess, the teamwork. But taking photos at the same time is not easy - in fact it can be quite stressful with little ones…

Which is where I come in! If you love making things at home with your little ones - I’d love to capture this in photos for you! Enjoy the process while I quietly snap away, turning your everyday activities into forever memories…

Simple Halloween Crafts for Children

If you’re after simple and fun Halloween crafts for toddlers and young children in the Cotswolds (or anywhere, really), this is for you.

Autumn’s the perfect time for simple, creative fun with your little ones - and they make a great photo too!But between costumes and half-term plans, “seasonal crafts” can sound like a lot. The good news? You don’t need to be elbow-deep in glitter glue to make special autumn memories. I’ve rounded up a few of my favourite low-effort, high-impact food crafts - easy, seasonal, cute, and in some cases, even edible.

Here are a few things I’ve made with my girls over the years… we’re not big into scary stuff - but I do have a soft spot for a theme…

Mummy Pumpkin with Googly Eyes - no carving required!

Wrap a regular pumpkin in bandages or strips of fabric, then add eyes made from milk bottle caps coloured with black marker. It takes minutes and looks brilliant on the doorstep.

Once Halloween is over, nothing is wasted - peel everything off and cook the pumpkin. Roast it for soup or fill quesadillas with feta cheese -

Spooky Soup with Cobweb Cream

Roasted vegetable soup makes a brilliant autumn lunch. Add three little circles of cream on top (an icing bag or sandwich bag with the corner snipped off works well). Then use a toothpick to drag lines outwards to make a cobweb. Low effort - high impact!

Painted Leaf Ghosts

Collect a few leaves on your next autumn walk. Paint them white, add eyes and a mouth, then string them together to make a ghost garland. Super simple, looks lovely, and works well for all ages.

Ghostly Window Drawings

Use white window pens to draw friendly ghosts on your windows. They last well and you can use the pens again for a snowy Christmas scene in a month or so’s time!

Find Chalk Window Pens Here

Cookie Monster Pumpkin

Paint your pumpkin blue, then carve out a semi circle. Stick black card onto milk bottle tops, stuff some paper to pad out and stick on as eyes! Place cookies on a plate in front of the pumpkin (not inside - they’ll go soggy - we found out the hard way! 😅)

Creepy Breadsticks

Shape pizza dough into fingers, adding knobbly bits for knuckles. Once baked, add jam or tomato purée to the ends and press in flaked almonds for nails. They look gruesome but taste delicious.

Breadsticks Recipe here

Jack O Lantern Satsumas

Draw Jack-o’-lantern faces on easy-peel oranges with a black marker. Pop them in lunchboxes or hand them out to trick-or-treaters - you'll be surprised at how many children choose these over sweets!

Use food colouring ink to draw faces onto marshmallows, or poke google eyes into them - a bit trickier than the satsumas, but a fun activity for practising those fine motor skills!

Veggie Monsters for Dipping

Mini peppers, cucumber sticks and carrots make great little characters. Cut out eyes and mouths with the tip of a knife and serve them with hummus or a dip of your choice. Quick to prepare and fun to eat!

Go the extra distance by making a spooky pizza - shape pizza dough into little ghosts or use ready-made bases. It’s a fun one for children to decorate themselves. Olives and mozzarella work well - the best bit is it's Halloween, so it doesn't matter if they're more wonky than wicked!

A Little Reminder

If the idea of any of these crafts send your head into a spin - just buy the themed food and tuck these ideas away for another year!

There are many hacks - Heinz tomato soup works just as well - ready-to-roll pizza dough is your friend :) What you may find is that the children are then happy to play for a little while by themselves afterwards - but if not, you have earned every right to sit them in front of the tv whilst enjoy the quiet in a corner!

I loved doing these with my girls - though most of my photos are just chaotic little iPhone snaps (it’s a lot to juggle crafting and photographing!). If you’d love someone else to handle the camera so you can be right there in the moment - flour-dusted fingers, gluey giggles, and all - that’s exactly what I love to capture.

Let’s chat about your family shoot

Why Pumpkin Patches Are a Photographer’s Autumn Dream

2 children with a wheelbarrow full of pumpkins during an autumn photoshoot in Cheltenham

As a Cotswolds photographer, pumpkin patches give me everything I love in a shoot: texture, colour, connection, and story.

Here’s why:
Natural, unscripted fun  - kids running with wheelbarrows, choosing pumpkins, giggling in the mud, it’s real joy
Incredible light - autumn light is soft, golden, and flattering. It adds warmth and glow to every photo (that magical late-afternoon light Americans love)
Pop of colour - pumpkins offer contrast against rural backdrops. Even cloudy days are stunning
Great family memories - these places are just great fun - no need for forced smiles!

Family-Friendly Autumn Walks in the Cotswolds

Father and son enjoying an autumn walk amongst leaves in Pittville park

The “do we have to…”  groans quickly turn into leaf fights, puddle jumps, and stick-duelling whoops of joy.

Because autumn in the Cotswolds is a season like no other. This year is even more special as it’s a mast year, which happens naturally due to a combination of good weather, abundant resources, and the tree's natural cycle of reproduction. This is when the ground seems positively littered with conkers, horse chestnuts, acorns and seeds. For children, it’s basically treasure-hunting heaven.

(Confession: my little ones have been scooping up conkers for me to “keep” so if you’ve got any ideas for crafting other than the usual conker fights my cupboards would be very grateful!! )

Regardless, let me take you on a tour of my favourite family-friendly autumn walks in the Cotswolds – perfect for children, dogs, and anyone who loves a good wander.

1. Batsford Arboretum – A Kaleidoscope of Colour

Girl smiling while holding a branch of leaves during an autumn photoshoot

Best for: Families who love vibrant colours and easy paths.

Batsford Arboretum, located near Moreton-in-Marsh, is a hidden gem when it comes to autumn walks. The collection of over 2,500 trees creates a spectacular burst of colours from deep reds to fiery oranges and yellows.

Photography Tip: The paths make perfect leading lines for family shots.

Family Moment: Children will love exploring - find the little houses carved in the trees!

Where next? Blockley Café for coffee, cake, and a warm-up.

2. Westonbirt Arboretum – A World of Autumnal Wonders

Young girl gazing at the autumn leaves in the Cotswolds

Best for: A big day out with kids and dogs.

Westonbirt Arboretum, one of the most famous autumnal destinations in the UK, is ideal for a day out with the family.

Photography Tip: The Maple Loop is one of the most photogenic spots, with the trees turning brilliant shades of red. A wide-angle shot from the treetop walkways will give you a perfect view of the autumn canopy.

Family Moment: The kids will love the hidden Gruffalo sculptures along the trail. A family portrait next to one of these woodland creatures is a must!

Where next? The Hare & Hounds Hotel serves a cracking Sunday roast nearby.

3. Lineover Woods – An Enchanted Forest Experience

Adventurous boy climbing a try with golden leaves during an autumn photoshoot

Best for:  Families seeking a quieter, more intimate woodland experience.

For those who love to explore woodlands off the beaten path, Lineover Woods near Cheltenham offers a peaceful escape. As the mists roll through the trees, the atmosphere here feels magical, with dappled sunlight casting long shadows over the fallen leaves.

Photography Tip: Lineover Woods is perfect for capturing that pure contrast of how tiny our children seem against the tall trees. Squat down and point your camera up to exaggerate that contrast.

Family Moment: A giant fallen log makes the ultimate climbing frame.

Where next? Dunkertons Park is nearby – perfect for bakery treats in the morning or grab lunch at one of the lovely street food eateries.

More info on Lineover Woods…

4. Broadway Tower – Majestic Views and Rolling Hills

A family walking together through a grassy countryside field on an autumn day

Best for: Families looking for a bit of adventure and incredible scenery.

Broadway Tower, standing tall, offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The walk up to the tower is easy enough for children but offers plenty of space for exploration. In autumn, the countryside below is a patchwork of orange, yellow, and green.

Photography Tip: Get low, and take a photo silhouetted against sky, or use the tower itself as a dramatic backdrop for a wide-angle landscape shot.

Family Moment:  Keep children going by getting them to spot the local wildlife - from ladybirds, to deer and longhorn cattle

Where next? Broadway village has plenty of food stops – Russell’s Fish & Chips is a family winner.

5. Painswick Rococo Gardens – A Hidden Autumn Treasure

Best for: Best for: Families who enjoy blending country gardens and wild woodland.

Painswick Rococo Gardens, tucked away in the village of Painswick, is a beautiful blend of formal gardens and wild woodland. The garden's quirky design includes hidden follies, winding paths, and a maze – all of which look spectacular as the autumn leaves fall.

Photography Tip:  Frame a shot through the archways of the gardens or the rustic stone buildings

Family Moment: Little legs go further when there’s something to spot - Head over at Half Term and take part in the Great Scarecrow Hunt!

Where next? Falcon Inn for hearty pub food in the village.

More info on Painswick Rococo Gardens

6. The Hedgehog Trail, Gotherington – A Family Challenge

Mother and daughter embracing face to face in Pittville park

Best for: Families who love a map and a task!

The Hedgehog Trail in Gotherington is a lovely activity for families or groups to enjoy together. It could take a few explorations to find them all, but there's lovely scenery, a fab pub, garden centre and park to visit! All profits are split between the three local charities supported by this event: Vale Wildlife Hospital, Friends of Gotherington School and The Old Chapel Community Project.

Photography Tip: Instead of taking a picture why not encourage the kids to get arty themselves and come up with their own hedgehog designs? Shifting the frame to inspire the next little snappers.

What to Bring Along

Wellies and layers – puddles and mud are irresistible.

Snacks and a flask – keeps little legs moving.

Charged camera or phone – autumn light is magic.

Dog leads – every walk here is dog-friendly.

This North Devon Airbnb Tells a Story -Here’s How I Helped Capture It

Seaview from an Airbnb property at Mortehoe

As an Airbnb host, you know it takes more than clean sheets and a great location to stand out. Guests are booking with their eyes and imagination. That’s why powerful, intentional photography can be the difference between an empty calendar and a fully booked season.

Seaview from Airbnb in Mortehoe

I recently had the pleasure of photographing a stunning top-floor apartment at Puffin Cove in Mortehoe, North Devon. This wasn't just a job it was a collaboration. Before I even touched the camera, I sat down with the host to understand the heart of their listing, a luxurious, family-friendly coastal retreat that delivers both elegance and serenity.

Together, we mapped out the intention behind every shot. This wasn’t about ticking boxes it was about evoking a feeling. The space is more than its layout, it's a place where you wake to the sound of waves and sip coffee with sea views. We wanted each image to transport viewers there, to make them imagine mornings bathed in light and evenings unwinding to a golden sunset.

So, I stayed until the sun dipped below the horizon. That golden hour glow turned the apartment into a sanctuary of warmth exactly the moment a future guest might picture themselves unwinding in.

The result? A gallery of lifestyle imagery that doesn’t just show the space but sells the experience.

If you're an Airbnb host looking to increase bookings, elevate your listing, and truly capture the story your space tells, let’s talk! I’d love to help bring your property to life through photography that connects.

Photoshoot giveaway prize winner

Meet the beautiful Miller family, winners of the Family Photoshoot Giveaway - based in Gloucestershire. I was so excited when I found out that the timing was perfect and that Amber was pregnant with her second child! So we patiently waited until her newborn had arrived and honestly, I’m obsessed with these images!

authentic-family-life-unfinished-home-reno-renovation

So many people stress that their home isn’t “photo ready.” That the walls aren’t perfect, the floors aren’t finished, or there’s just too much chaos. But let these photos be the proof that none of that matters.

The Millers are right slap bang in the middle of transforming their family home. When it’s finished, it’s going to be absolutely stunning. But right now? They’re living with the bones of their vision - bare plaster, inherited wallpaper, and unfinished details. But none of that takes away from the love that fills their space. In fact, it’s a reminder that life doesn’t wait for perfection.

Because that’s what truly makes a home. When you look at these photos, you don’t see paint colours or Pinterest-worthy corners (although, side note—their downstairs WC is gorgeous!). You see warmth, joy, and love—the giggles, their devoted family cat vying for attention, the sleepy-eyed cuddles on the sofa. You see the moments that make life so rich: the yawns, the teeny tiny hands and feet, and the way they lean into each other when they think no one’s watching. These are the everyday moments that matter most.

So if you’ve been putting off capturing your family just because your house isn’t “perfect,” please don’t. These moments are happening now. And trust me, when you look back, you won’t care what the walls looked like - you’ll just be grateful you have these memories to hold onto.

If you’re ready to capture your own family’s story, let’s make it happen. These moments won’t last forever - but the memories? They’re yours to keep.

Time is passing so quickly....

It’s hard to take a deep breath right now, summer was a lazy blur of activity which seemed endless at the time, but now seems forever ago! In the constant juggle of balancing home, work, and kids, it often feels like time slips through our fingers and before we know it, they’ll have grown out of their shoes again!

I’m finding it increasingly challenging to fit it all in while trying to maintain my sanity - in fact, we simply can’t do it all, and it’s essential to hold space for ourselves amidst the chaos of our daily lives.

One thing that truly grounds me though - is taking photos. It allows me to breathe slower, take everything in, and concentrate on the elements that truly matter - the little things that we love about right now but often take for granted. I bring this same philosophy to my photoshoots, creating a space where families can pause, reflect, and simply be in the moment.

I’m excited to share a few images from a wonderful shoot we had to celebrate a milestone birthday - a great opportunity to reflect. We enjoyed a slow morning together, savoring homemade banana bread paired with rich, ice-cold milk, twirling around and laughing as time felt like it stopped still…

Bottling up your memories in photos...

If you’re interested in a beautiful portrait of your child amidst the blooming flowers in a lovely field in the Cotswolds, then I’ll happily oblige and craft a stunning image for you. But on the condition that that is not the only thing that I will photograph… My sessions are about more than just capturing a single image; they focus on documenting the best day from your family’s everyday life - a day that you will always remember.

I firmly believe that the genuine moments shared with your loved ones are what truly matter and deserve to be captured. Part of my process is dedicating the time to understand your family—what makes each member unique, as well as the dynamics that define your relationships. This personal connection allows me to capture the real connections and emotions that exist within your family.

My goal is to create a relaxed atmosphere where you can be yourselves. It’s not about posing, it’s about celebrating the little things that make your family who you are. Each session presents a wonderful opportunity to freeze time and create a stunning collection of images that you and your family will appreciate for years to come.

For instance, this family wanted their shoot in the picturesque Cotswold Lavender Fields, which is an obviously beautiful backdrop. However, during my onboarding process, I discovered that they had loved flying their kite, so I asked them if they could bring the kite along with them. And I’m so glad that I did!

It infused a sense of adventure into the afternoon, and it was truly lovely to watch and capture the children's excitement and joy as they played—everyone had a brilliant afternoon running around together. These are exactly the kinds of experiences I live to capture—this is more than just a photoshoot; it’s a real memory.

What memories would you like to preserve for your family? Let’s work together to create something meaningful that reflects your family’s unique journey.

I was so excited when Rosie and Rose asked me to photograph their birth! We clicked when I came over to photograph their Maternity Photos. What I love about them is that they are exactly as you expect them to be, so warm, funny and natural - with no pretensions. I just knew that they would make such an awesome birthing team, and I couldn't wait to bottle up these amazing memories for them.

It was a big commitment though. I was on call weeks before the due date with my kit bag packed and ready to leave at the drop of a hat, not being able to be more than 2 hours away from home. I knew the many unknowns of the journey that a birth may take, and wanted to do my best to capture it in the most honest and beautiful way possible for them. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous - knowing that I had zero control of this entire process.

However, if there is one thing that I could say that I love photographing most - it is pure and tangible emotion between loved ones. And the process of giving birth is one where strength, connection, support, resilience, joy and raw emotion collide in one short space of time.

We had been making jokes and placing wagers on when their baby would arrive. A week before her due date, Rosie had thought she was in labour, which turned out to be braxton hicks. Fast forward to a week after her due date, we were in touch for 36 hours whilst she was at home and in early labour. I knew we were in for the long haul from here on.

Although they had originally planned a home birth, at the time, it was tricky liaising with the midwives on call. And whilst Rosie had done so well to stay at home for this long, they made the decision to head into Cheltenham Birth Unit to see how she was progressing. Amazingly she had dilated to 6cm at home, so there was no turning back from this point. I wolfed down my dinner, kissed my little girls goodnight, and rushed out of the door to meet them - at around 8pm.

It was so lovely to see them again and share the excitement that they would soon be meeting their long awaited baby! Rose was in her crocs busily organising their things, and Rosie was on the bed drinking up gas and air, doing her make up in between contractions and striking diva poses! I mean, I knew she was going to be amazing and strong, but this was on another level!

One of the things that I’m most passionate about is telling your story, capturing your true emotions with my photos. These are your memories - not mine. Part of my process is getting to know you on a personal level. It allows me to zone in on what is before me - finding the best angle to tell your story, using light to enhance the emotion, anticipating the exact moment to click the shutter. For Rosie and Rose, what I saw was the many facets of their wonderful relationship, they have so much fun together, are so supportive of one another, and were on this journey to parenthood as one.

Rosie moved to the Water Bath, breathing through her contractions via the birthing lifeline that is gas and air. Rose was by her side every step of the way, tirelessly making sure that Rosie was as comfortable as she could be under the circumstances, keeping things positive and upbeat, getting snacks and drinks, keeping family updated and staying super strong when things got tough...

And they got tougher. The clock crawled towards 12:30am, the time at which the midwives said they would measure Rosie again. Amazingly she had made it to full dilation (10cm) on just gas and air, which we were so excited about…

However progress slowed as Rosie was understandably getting tired after such a long time. She powered through nonetheless - again Rose barely taking a breath for herself, making sure that she could help and support in any way that she could.

The timings were such that the midwives were minutes away from blue lighting Rosie to hospital for possible intervention, which none of us wanted, especially having come this far. This is the point where true resilience kicked in.

It was now all down to Rosie, who despite being exhausted by now, drew upon all of her strength within her - and after what seemed like an eternity at the time, their baby boy finally made it earth side, just after 3am in the morning.

Being invited into this private space to document this for Rosie and Rose was a true honour. I hope that you see their inner strength, humour and the love that they have for one another in the photos. What a wonderful inspiration and a rock solid team they are! Ziggy Wilder is a lucky boy to have them both as his parents.

Making Childhood Memories at the Beach

Cornwall (or any west facing beach to be quite honest) When the tide is out as the sun goes down, magic happens...

I love photographing at the beach, and end up having as much fun as the children… We go to Cornwall every year, and each year I toy with the idea of extending my trip and offering shoots out whilst I'm down there... Let me know if you’d like to capture some family holiday memories next year!

Here are a few of my photos whilst I we were on holiday…

A frosty Walk in the Cotswolds

Just sharing a few photos as we took a break from homeschooling today, as the news at the moment is so heavy, and I wanted to post something positive.

It was so just what the doctor ordered to soak the sunshine. The frost was magical. I thought about how nature endures so much, as I focussed on the leaves that are covered in frost.

The value word that the school are focussing on is Perseverance. I’ll be honest, screen based schooling is something that feels so misaligned with my values - yesterday I really struggled with the concept that this is how they will be learning for the forseeable future. But the school are doing their very best, and amazingly in the current circumstances.

And when the teacher read out a story based on the poem The Race by DH Groberg this afternoon, it really hit home - I felt quite emotional. This is so very hard. Picking ourselves back up time and time again is . But we’re doing this in the best way that we can. Let’s keep going. We’ll get there.

Sending light and hope to all. Please reach out if you need.

Sharing our Snow Days in the Cotswolds...

Freezing time. Photography for me is not just about capturing the best portraits (whilst they are part and parcel of the process). It’s about capturing the best feelings that we have in our hearts right now. My aim is for you to hear the laughter, feel air on your faces, and relive this time every time you see them…

We were so lucky to have had snow in the Cotswolds just after Christmas. It was the perfect pick me up to take us through the coming weeks. We took the girls sledging, and we all screamed as we hurtled down the hill. I bottled up our joy as I do, and thought I’d share some with you here…

The Perfect Christmas Tree

For those of you who are seeing everyone’s picture perfect Christmas photos and feeling like yours is not quite enough, or not there yet…

I see you, I am you, and I raise you our Christmas Tree - decorated courtesy of the girl’s toy Dragons… I’m considering keeping it this way this year… for if this year has taught us anything, it is to let go of perfection and embrace what we have…
